HORSHAM CRICKET FESTIVAL: Sussex slump to heavy defeat inside three days

The comprehensive result at Cricketfield Road saw Sussex drop into the Division 1 relegation places as they were bowled out for 213 and 254 as Notts batted first and amassed 570-7 declared.

After Sussex were bowled out for 213 in the morning on day three, Notts enforced the follow on before lunch and Matt Machan looked to lead an unlikely fight back with a century.

The wickets, however, fell at regular intervals around him and just a half century from Luke Wright was the other score of note as Sussex ended a torrid couple of days with the bat.

With Luke Wells gone for no score, Sussex found themselves at 0-1 at the start of the second innings.

Ed Joyce and Machan saw them into lunch at 14-1 trailing by 343 runs, before they shared a second-wicket stand of 92 with some lofty blows after the interval.

Joyce eventually went for 32 and Chris Nash could only add 15 to take the score to 124-3.

Sussex resumed after tea with Machan on 85 and Wright 14 and the former added a few quick hits to bring up his 99-ball ton.

The impressive Gurney then got the breakthrough for Notts as Machan edged to slip for 108 with Sussex on 183-4.

Craig Cachopa then top-edged a sweep and was gone for four, before Ben Brown followed for a duck with Sussex on 194-6.

After a little resistance, Ollie Robinson nicked a good ball from Luke Wood down the leg side that was caught by Notts skipper Chris Read.

Wright then eased on to 50 from 59 balls with his second half century of the day, but he was soon on his way for 67 after a couple of quick boundaries, he was caught behind swiping at a Gary Keedy delivery to leave Sussex at 250-8.

Magoffin then went without troubling the scoreboard for the fifth duck of the day, while Peter Burgoyne (13) was last man to go, lbw to Wood as Sussex were all out for 254.

Mark Robinson had hoped for a brighter day so his batsmen could put up a fight on the good wicket, but only half of that wish came true in the morning session.

On a brighter day, Wright (21) and Cachopa (13) resumed at 157-4, but the latter was soon trapped lbw by Brett Hutton without adding to his score.

Brown soon followed for five as he was caught to take the score to 187-6. Wright looked to be taking the initiative and moved onto 50 from 86 balls with 10 fours.

But the batsmen was also soon back in the pavilion as he edged to the slips with Harry Gurney achieving his second five-wicket haul against Sussex this season to leave them on 194-7.

Robinson then went for a duck and a stale patch ensured, before Burgoyne (14) and Magoffin (six*) helped Sussex past the 200-mark for a batting point.

Burgoyne was clean bowled by a Luke Wood yorker for 13 with the score of 212 and Magoffin added one more, before Hobden also went for a duck as Notts enforced the follow-up.
