Perfect Paine takes 5-0

Nick Paine returned the extraordinary bowling figures of 5-0 for Rye Cricket Club on Saturday.

Coming on at first change, Paine produced an incredible 4.1-over spell to bowl opponents Robertsbridge out for a paltry 31 in a one-sided East Sussex Division Two fixture.

Craig Pierce bagged 4-4 off nine overs and Sandun Dias took the other wicket. Richard Weller earlier top-scored with 47 as Rye made 188-9 batting first at The Salts with Allan Hughes claiming 5-35.

In the same division, Battle lost by three wickets at home to Hailsham. Battle were all out for 141 batting first despite 32 from Mike Gedye, who went on to take 4-33 with the ball.

Iden contested a high-scoring draw at home to Ditchling in Division One. The visitors totalled 257-7 batting first with Mark Kitching picking up 4-44 and Iden reached 235-8 in reply thanks largely to 130 from Phil Shanks.

Also worth a mention is Pett achieving their first win since 2009 with a 96-run success at home to Rottingdean II in Division Four. Full reports on all these matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
