Priory keen to rediscover winning form

A sequence of three defeats and two abandonments means Priory have slipped from first to third in the Sussex Cricket Premier.

Although they have not won since seeing off Chichester Priory Park on June 16, Priory are still only 19 points adrift of leaders Preston Nomads with a third of the season remaining.

Their cause was helped elsewhere last weekend because while they were losing by seven wickets away to relegation-threatened neighbours Bexhill, Nomads’ game against Roffey was abandoned due to a waterlogged ground.

“In many ways we were extremely lucky,” said Priory captain George Campbell. “Nomads being called off against Roffey means the gap hasn’t got any bigger.”

Mid-table East Grinstead roll into Horntye Park tomorrow seven days after enjoying a good win over Eastbourne.

“Grinny have got two or three good pros which always makes a difference to the side. They’re dangerous and not to be taken lightly,” said Campbell.

“It’s difficult to say whether the team is out of form because Saturday was the first game we have played in three weeks (following abandoned fixtures against Horsham and Roffey).

“I’m not too worried because we are still a very strong side and more than capable of winning every game we play.

“In some ways the Bexhill game might work in our favour and get us energised and make us hit the game running,” he went on. “We need decent performances. We’re a young, hungry side and I fully expect us to get up for the big games to come.”
