Promotion push gathering pace

Hamish Russell believes Bexhill have “every chance” of clinching an unlikely promotion.

Bexhill have won their last four completed matches to sneak up on the rails in the race for second place in Sussex Cricket League Division Two.

Russell, their first team manager, said: “I think we’ve got every chance of going up. I think there’s teams that don’t want to play us because we’re a dangerous side. We’ve got match-winners in our side with bat and ball.”

Last weekend’s nine-wicket thrashing of relegation-threatened Ifield has moved fourth-placed Bexhill within 13 points of second-placed Glynde & Beddingham, who lost to fifth-placed Goring By Sea.

Haywards Heath remain three points ahead of Bexhill in third after seeing off struggling Stirlands, but the five clubs from second to sixth are covered by just 27 points with four matches remaining.

“It’s a funny league,” continued Russell. “Anyone can beat anyone on their day. But we’re on a bit of a run now and confidence is booming. Everyone’s keen to play cricket and we can’t wait to get the ball or bat in hand.”

Next up for Bexhill tomorrow (Saturday) is a trip to sixth-placed Cuckfield. Bexhill are 14 points above the mid-Sussex outfit, but Cuckfield cruised home by eight wickets in the reverse fixture at The Polegrove.

“I think Saturday will be crucial,” added Russell. “They’re an experienced side, they’ve done it before and they’ll be desperate to go back up. It will be a really tough game.”

The form book favours Bexhill because they haven’t lost since the teams last met on June 11. Cuckfield, by contrast, haven’t won since that game and have drawn their last three matches.
