Sidley one win from title

Sidley are gunning for the Sussex Cricket League Division Three (East) title.

They head the table by eight points and are 99 per cent sure of staying there if they win their final game at home to Keymer & Hassocks tomorrow (Saturday), even though six teams have a mathematical chance of top spot.

Sidley captain Scott Woodroffe said: “I doubt whether I’ll get a great deal of sleep this week, Saturday can’t come quickly enough. We’ve waited a long time to win something and hopefully we can finish the job on Saturday.”

Woodroffe’s side was fourth going into last weekend, but victory over then second-placed team Ansty, coupled with defeats for Hellingly and Seaford, has catapulted Sidley back to the summit.

“It’s unbelievable really isn’t it,” continued Woodroffe. “It all worked out ideally for us on Saturday. We were

close to being out of it a couple of weeks ago, but results have gone our way and it’s in our hands once again.”

Ironically, Sidley hosted Keymer on the final day of the 2009 season. They only had an outside chance of the title that day and defeat meant Keymer clinched top spot with Sidley coming third.

Keymer came straight back down last year and are seventh this term. Although Sidley clinched the reverse fixture in early June by 69 runs, Keymer may be a different proposition tomorrow as they’ve won their last five matches.

“We’ve got to make sure we don’t under-estimate them,” Woodroffe added. “They’ve got two of the best bowlers in the league and it’s not going to be an easy game by any stretch of the imagination.”

Peter King is rated 50-50 at best with his calf injury. Steve Ramsden is on holiday having played in all 17 games so far, but Richard Harrison, a key figure in the reverse fixture, is back after missing the last four.
