Sidley show they can compete

They may prop up the fledgling Sussex Division Two table, but Sidley’s performance last weekend shows they can compete.

The Gullivers-based outfit was edged out off the final ball of an incredible cricket match at home to Glynde & Beddingham despite rattling up 351-4 declared batting first.

Sidley captain John Haffenden said: “Glynde only missed out on promotion by three points last year and we took them to the last ball. We’ve got a good enough side to compete.”

Haffenden’s charges are one of only two teams in the division still to record a win, but they are less than a quarter of the way through their programme and are yet to field their strongest side.

“We need to up the fielding stakes,” continued Haffenden. “Last year (when Sidley won the Division Three East title) we didn’t need it; we managed to roll sides and we could chase down. This year the step up is a lot.”

Sidley are back on their travels tomorrow (Saturday) when they contest their first ever league game against Goring By Sea. The Worthing-based team has won one, drawn one, lost one and had one abandoned so far.

Key all-rounder Neil Priddy, who scored an unbeaten 132 and took two wickets against Glynde, is unavailable, while Wes Tate and Ben Ramsden are in line to come up from the seconds.

Paul Nice is expected to have a run-out in the seconds as he continues his recovery from a wrist problem. See today’s Bexhill Observer for the full article.
