It’s Sussex’s first four-day outing since the draw with Kent at Tunbridge Wells and they will be eager to put pressure on the teams in the upper echelons of the table. They are unbeaten against Essex in their last seven meetings; the sides drew earlier this season at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove, as Chris Nash scored a century.

This is the first time since 2003 that these sides have met in Essex, they happened to play each other in Colchester on that occasion too when Sussex won by an innings.

Sussex have moved to re-sign David Wiese for the final stages of the season. The South African all-rounder played four games in the NatWest T20 Blast and one in the Royal London One-Day Cup for Sussex earlier this season in a short stint as overseas player, but now returns to Hove after playing in the Caribbean Premier League for Barbados Tridents.

He is now available for the remaining seven Specsavers County Championship matches, replacing Ross Taylor, who played his final Sussex game of the season against Kent before heading to Zimbabwe to play in New Zealand’s latest Test Series.

Matt Machan misses out against Essex with a wrist injury and George Garton is unavailable due to sore shins. Christian Davis, who is with Sussex on non-contract terms and made his debut in last night’s Royal London One-Day Cup match with Kent, is included in the squad. Jofra Archer, who signed a new contract this week, would make his Championship debut if selected.

The Sussex squad is as follows: Jofra Archer, Will Beer, Danny Briggs, Ben Brown (wkt), Christian Davis, Harry Finch, Chris Jordan, Ed Joyce, Steve Magoffin, Chris Nash, Luke Wells, Stuart Whittingham, David Wiese, Luke Wright (c)
