Young gun Shawn hits stunning century

A SUPERB hundred from teenager Shawn Johnson could not prevent Bexhill from slipping to defeat against leaders Horsham in the Sussex Cricket Premier League.

The talented 16-year-old opener carried his bat for an undefeated 111 out of a total of 179 all out at The Polegrove on Saturday.

Johnson’s runs came off 120 balls and included 16 fours. It was just as well he was on form because the rest of the top eight batsmen contributed just 14 runs between them as Bexhill slumped to 24-4 and then 67-7.

Support finally arrived from the lower order as Jack Munro chipped in with 24 and Jamie Bristow-Diamond 12 not out. The league’s top wicket-taker Michael Munday grabbed 4-59.

Horsham did not have things all their own way because at one stage they found themselves in a little bit of trouble at 92-5 but they eventually finished on 183-7. Sam Attfield made 60 not out and Owain Jones 31, while Ian Ellis claimed 4-30 and Joe Cox 2-25.

Bexhill remain second from bottom - 20 points adrift of Chichester Priory Park in the final position of safety - with two rounds of fixtures remaining.

Premier League standings (played 17 unless stated): Horsham 362pts, Preston Nomads (16) 345, Hastings Priory 309, East Grinstead 266, Roffey 263, Worthing 243, Brighton & Hove 238, Chichester Priory Park 237, Bexhill 217, Eastbourne 214.
