Daina head over heels with silver

A Hastings gymnast won a silver medal at the British National Trampoline Championships.

Daina Rose came second in the under-17 girls’ individual event at the NIA Birmingham with a personal best total score of 134.845.

Fifteen-year-old Rose had led after the two qualifying rounds on Saturday with a score of 87.435 from two brilliantly performed routines.

The top eight of the 21 competitors went through to Sunday’s one-round final and because Rose was leading overnight, she was last to jump.

Although she performed another super routine, a slip on landing meant Rose received a 1.5-point deduction which pushed her back to silver.

Rose booked her place at the NIA by meeting the qualifying standard when coming second at a gala in Hatfield at the end of January. She did it again in coming third at a gala in Yorkshire a month later.

The year 10 Helenswood School pupil, who has another year in the under-17 age group, also lined-up in the under-19 girls’ synchronised event with Sheffield-based partner Georgie Haylock.

National champions two years ago, Rose and Haylock went into the event ranked fourth of the eight finalists. But Haylock was unable to perform any double somersaults so a last minute routine change meant they finished eighth.

Rose was one of 16 lucky young talents selected to attend a training opportunity at the North Greenwich Arena, venue for the Olympic gymnastics competition, on Thursday.

Now with four single and six double somersaults in her routine, she continues to train hard and work on more complex routines with the aim of qualifying for next year’s World Age Group Championships.

A national development squad member, Rose has taken part in the World Age Group Championships for each of the past three years.
