The St Leonards-based world number 14 began with a 4-2 victory over 109th-ranked Elliot Slessor on Monday. Davis, whose top break was 61, was behind twice before reeling off the last three frames.

He then came from behind to see off 20th-ranked Michael Holt 4-1 in the last 32 yesterday (Wednesday) helped by runs of 67 and 51.

Davis’s progress was halted, however, by a 4-2 loss against world number five and reigning Welsh Open champion Stephen Maguire this morning.

Davis potted the last three colours to edge a long opening frame and although Maguire rattled through the second, a 96 gave Davis the third. Davis began the fourth with a 45, but Maguire came back to win that and the next two.
