Davis pipped in Bingham thriller

Snooker star Mark Davis missed out on a first ever full ranking event final in agonising fashion this morning (Saturday).

The St Leonards player produced an amazing comeback from 4-0 down to lead 5-4 against Stuart Bingham in the first Wuxi Classic semi-final only to lose the next two frames for a 6-5 defeat.

World number 16 Bingham began the match by displaying the form that has brought him two titles already this season with a 79 break to capture the opening frame 79-0. He then potted the colours to edge the second 77-64.

Essex cueman Bingham, who won the Australian Goldfields Open last summer, bagged the third 73-12 after a run of 50 and cruised through the fourth 105-05 thanks to a 64.

But world number 19 Davis came roaring back after the interval. He opened his account by claiming frame five 86-26 aided by a run of 70 and another 70 gave him the next 108-30 to make it 4-2.

A third 70 earned Davis frame seven 108-30 and although Bingham opened up a 51-point lead in the eighth, Davis came back to sneak it 55-52 courtesy of a 54 clearance to level at 4-4.

Davis then went 5-4 in front after bagging frame nine 86-28 with all his points coming in a single visit. He took an early lead in frame 10 only for Bingham to pull through 70-33 and force a decider.

Thirty-nine-year-old Davis scored the first six points of frame nine, but Bingham replied with a magnificent 134 break to edge through to a final against Marcus Campbell or Ricky Walden tomorrow (Sunday).

It was still a tremendous week for Davis, who reached his first full ranking event semi-final thanks to wins over Ding Junhui, Jamie Burnett and Graeme Dott having previously come through the qualifiers.
