The St Leonards potter will take his place alongside some big names from the recent past and the present day in the 16-man event at the Guild Hall, Preston.

World number 23 Davis will face 47th-ranked Ken Doherty - the 1997 world champion - in the opening round on Saturday at around 7pm.

The winner will advance to the quarter-finals, which along with the semi-finals and final, will be played on Sunday. All matches are the best of three frames.

Davis, 43, won both meetings with Irish cueman Doherty in 2015 and won all four of his matches at last month’s qualifiers without dropping a frame, conceding only three points in the last two.

The event will be Davis’s first competitive outing of 2016, and the field also includes other former world champions Peter Ebdon, John Parrott and Mark Williams (the title holder), plus six-time world runner-up Jimmy White.
