A day of triumph for Hastings AC

The local club provided the male and female individual race winners at Pett last weekend, as well as clinching the team title by a convincing margin.

Kieron Booker underlined his continual improvement by claiming his maiden race victory, crossing the line 22 seconds clear of the runner-up.

Paul Bennett was fourth and Paul McCleery 11th, while the unlucky Blake Mitchell ended up 13th having been incorrectly directed when a comfortable fourth.

Ben McCallion was 15th and Carlo Forte 16th, and Mark Thomas and Phillip Handrahan made the top 25 in ideal conditions, although the course was very muddy in places.

Karen Murdoch was the leading lady in 29th overall and Lucy Martlew was third lady. Riz Maslen also ran well.

Gary Foster won the men’s league title even though he didn’t run on Sunday, instead opting to rest a slight foot problem ahead of this weekend’s Hastings Half Marathon.

Several of Hastings AC’s most talented young runners represented Sussex at the UK Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships in Loughborough.

On a very undulating and muddy course, George Pool was in the top 10 of the under-10 boys’ race until pulling out through illness.

Despite saying it was the hardest race she’d ever done, Maya Ramnarine came 26th in the under-15 girls’ event - a great result considering she has another year in the age group.

Evie Clements was the sixth Sussex girl and 212th overall in the same race having only been called-up as a reserve a couple of days beforehand following the withdrawal of injured clubmate Harmony Cooper.

In the under-13 girls’ race, Erica Body was 92nd overall and the third Sussex athlete, with Shannon Hopkins-Parry 181st.

Carlos Nieto did well to finish 44th overall and the second Sussex competitor in the under-13 boys’ race. The following day he came sixth at the National Prep Schools’ Championships.
