Crowhurst Park’s cricketers suffered their first league defeat of the season despite two of their players achieving five-wicket hauls.
Park skipper Clive Tong picked up his first ever five-for and Dale Payne took the other five wickets, but it couldn’t prevent a 40-run loss away to Portslade in Sussex Cricket League Division Three.
With rain in the air, Park won the toss and chose to field first. Tong (16-4-62-5) made the initial breakthrough in just his second over with the score on seven.
The rain was now coming down harder, but there was no sign of the umpires taking the players off as Tong and Harley (5-0-25-0) bounded through the overs.
Payne was introduced and picked up Park’s second wicket in the 14th over, ending a partnership of 58 between Dave Wainwright and Danny Hanson by having Wainwright (32) caught in the slips by Ed Smissen.
Wickets then fell regularly. Alex Smith (4) was trapped lbw by Tong and Hansen (21) was bowled by Payne, who in his next over had Ian Wainwright (5) caught by Tong at midwicket. Tong claimed his third wicket when Dan Holgate (9) was caught at cover by Joel Bruun.
Portslade captain Paul Glover and Steve Case stemmed the tide until Case (13) was lbw to Payne. Glover and Mark Gravett forged a steady partnership of 30 to take the score to 127 before Glover (27) was bowled by Tong.
The last two wickets fell for a further eight runs as Portslade were all out for 135. Andrew Mamoany was caught by Matt Peters at gully off Tong and Payne (10.3-0-39-5) had Gravett (13) caught by Tong at midwicket.
For the third time in as many Park matches, the second innings began before tea. With the rain still coming down, Park had seven tricky overs to negotiate prior to the interval.
Ben Phillimore was dismissed in the second over, caught by Case off the bowling of Mamoany (7-0-34-2) and three balls later Bruun was trapped lbw.
Rak Patel and Payne put together a mini-partnership of 18 before Payne was bowled by Smith (4-0-15-1) and Park were 33-3 when tea was taken.
The break did Park good and some nice shots to the boundary were played after the resumption. But with the partnership at 32 and the score on 59, Patel (25) was caught by Holgate off the bowling of Glover (11.1-4-20-4).
Tong was caught by Danny Wainwright for five, again off the bowling of Glover, who with his next ball trapped Justin Harley lbw. Ed Smissen (17) was caught off the bowling of Case six runs later.
Number nine Fox Parker made 21 off just 20 balls until being caught off Case (5-1-17-2) the ball after hitting a lovely six over deep square leg.
Jon Peters and Josh Jones both went for ducks in consecutive deliveries to end a disappointing performance with the bat as Park were all out for 95. The Claremont School man of the match was Payne.
