Egerton quintet get county call

EGERTON Park will have no less than five players in the 24-man Sussex team for the Liberty Trophy inter-county Championship first round bowls match against Buckinghamshire.

This is the first time in many years that so many have been chosen from the Bexhill club and reflects the strength in depth at Egerton who defeated Denton Island 9-2 away from home in their opening Sussex League fixture.

After impressive trial games against Kent and Surrey, Peter Gunston will skip a rink in his third match for the county indoors. Kevin Carrie and Steve Nevard will be making their debuts at this level, Nevard leading for Simon Pettingel (Grattons) and 19-year-old Carrie playing number 2 in a block skipped by England under-25 international Ollie Ovett. Steve Sands has also made the team and will play front end to Ovett's father Dave.

The final Egerton player is Charles Wright, who has been chosen for the 11th consecutive season and is one of the more experienced bowlers in the team. Wright will play number 2 to Derek Dyer of Eastbourne IBC. Keith Cheetham (Falaise) has been selected as a travelling reserve.

The winners of the first round match at Chawton Park IBC on Saturday November 1 will meet Worcestershire or Gloucestershire in round two.
