Falaise in historic Denny Cup run

Falaise IBC has reached the last 32 in the EIBA Inter Club Championship, the Denny Cup, for the first time in over 40 years.

The Hastings-based bowls club, sponsored by Focus Investments, is the last Sussex team in the national club championship and will play Bournemouth IBC, who include international Peter Ward in their ranks, on Saturday December 3 at 10am.

Against Eastbourne in the last round, the success was comprehensive with all four rinks winning. Away from home, Mick Grimes, the recalled Declan Nye, Aaron Sexton and Steve Jeapes played well to defeat Ian Coombes 26-17.

With Martin Heitzman, fresh from his Liberty Trophy success, skipping the other team of Charles Wright (pictured), Tony Ives and Keith Cheetham to a surprisingly easy 21-11 win over Derek Dyer, the foundation was set for a big victory. Ives had an excellent match in Heitzman’s rink.

At home, Dave Smith, Eric Clarkson, Ken Taber and Graham Lavender won comfortably 26-13 over Steve Bain, while the front end of Danny Dargen and Ron Packham set Nick Wingfield and Trevor Logan up well as they defeated Dave Booth 22-14.

The large margin of the victory shows that the club selectors have got the lay-out of the team right and the team is very well balanced.
