Adams double nets RUR Cup glory

Rye United have won the Sussex RUR Charity Cup for the first time in 44 years.

A brace of clinically taken Sam Adams penalties gave Rye a 2-0 victory in the final against Selsey last night (Tuesday).

Adams opened the scoring after 13 minutes with a spot-kick awarded for handball, but Rye weren’t playing well and Sean Kelly was fortunate not to be shown a second yellow card before half time.

Selsey remained on top at the start of the second half and the Rye goal survived a couple of scares before Adams doubled their lead in the 60th minute following a foul on Wes Tate.

It certainly wasn’t a classic performance from Rye at the Sussex FA County Ground in Lancing, but cup finals are all about winning and Scott Price’s side did enough in an all-Sussex Division One clash.

Rye (4-5-1): Pelling; P. Watson, Loft, Rhodes, Richardson; Tate (Pogue 63), Kelly (Radley HT), Adams, Maclean (J. Watson 82), Upton; Ramsay. Subs not used: White, Winchester.
