Bexhill keen to be in the mix

New-look Bexhill United are eager to be in contention at the business end of the season.

That’s the aim according to joint manager Jamie Podmore as Bexhill prepare to begin the 2011/12 Sussex County Football League Division Two campaign at Loxwood on Saturday.

Podmore said: “I’m sure there’s sides out there that are paying big money that will be just as good or better than us possibly, but we want to be in the mix, we want to still be playing for things come the back end of the season.”

It’s been all change at The Polegrove since Gerard Moyse led Bexhill to a fourth place finish last term. Podmore and fellow joint boss Darrol Parris have come in, while Robin Powell has replaced Colin Dunstall as chairman.

Parris and Podmore have brought in a number of Sidley United fringe and reserve team players, plus two or three who featured quite a lot for the front side, plus others playing senior football elsewhere, notably Danny Ellis.

Much of last season’s squad has moved on and, in fact, you can probably count the number of players who have stayed on the fingers of one hand. It will certainly be a very different Bexhill in 2011/12.

“We’re pleased with it, but whether it’s good enough to challenge the top three - like we want to - we’ll have to wait and see. Considering how late we came into it, everybody’s really fit,” added Podmore.

Ellis should return from holiday, but Matt Dadswell is struggling to make the Loxwood game through work. Bexhill will be back in action next Wednesday night with a trip to Seaford Town.
