Big freeze wipes out football

After months of mild and fairly dry weather, winter has finally arrived with a vengeance.

The freezing temperatures of the past few days have decimated today’s football programme with all matches involving the area’s senior teams postponed due to frozen pitches.

The list of casualties is headed by Hastings United’s match away to AFC Hornchurch in the Ryman League Premier Division.

Also off are the Sussex County League Division One matches between Rye United and St Francis Rangers, and Sidley United and Redhill.

Sussex Division Two has been hit as well with the matches involving Bexhill United and Southwick, Little Common and Steyning Town, and Storrington and Westfield all called-off.

The reserve team games between Eastbourne United AFC and Rye, Hassocks and Sidley, and Westfield and Seafield Town will be played at a later date too.

Prior to today, Bexhill were the only one of the area’s six senior football clubs to have had a game postponed because of the weather this season.
