Bloor content with point after Concord deny Eastbourne - report, pictures and highlights

Eastbourne Borough were made to settle for a point after James Blanchfield’s late strike gave Concord Rangers a share of the spoils at a bitterly cold Priory Lane - but Sports boss Danny Bloor was content with the reward.

Greg Luer looked to have put the Sports on the road to four wins in a row when he broke the deadlock with eight minutes to go. However, the visitors fought back and Blanchfield stabbed home from close range after a scramble in the penalty area with two minutes to go.

Despite that, Borough boss Danny Bloor was pleased with a point. He said: “I feel that it’s a fantastic point. We’re now unbeaten in four, and have lots of positives to take from the game, albeit that we weren’t at our best in the first half.

“We made real improvement after half time, and had some other chances too. You can’t play well all the time, people can get carried away but it’s good that we keep our unbeaten run. It’s been a tough time for Concord but they came here with a game plan and were very resilient, resolute and they probably think they deserve a point.”

There wasn’t much to choose between the sides with both teams finding it difficult in the final third in the first half. Odei Martin and then Norman Wabo both had half chances on goal, but both efforts were low and straight at Franco Ravizzoli in the Borough goal.

The best the Sports could get in the opening 45 was when Kai Innocent pounced on a loose ball outside the area, but he snatched at it and sent the ball high and wide.

Borough found themselves in better areas early in the second half, but only really came to life with the introduction of Charlie Walker from the bench.

And it was the Sports’ club captain who had the first real chance of the game just after the hour mark. Dean Cox found space on the left and he picked out Walker perfectly, but from inside six yards he saw his header come back off the bar.

Walker then shot wide after good build up play from Borough, but Concord dealt a reminder of the threat they posed when Ryan Charles fired the ball across the six yard box, but no blue shirt could turn it in.

But with eight minutes to go, it was Eastbourne who struck the opening goal after a slick passage of play. Luer drove at the Beachboys’ defence and found Ferry, who in turn played the ball through to Rollinson. Through on goal, he cut the ball across to Luer, who continued his run forward to fire into an empty net.

Borough then spurned a chance to double their lead when Rollinson found James Ferry inside the area, but he fired over the top when well placed.

And the Sports were made to pay when Concord drew level in the dying embers. Eastbourne appeals for a foul were waved away as the ball pinballed around the penalty area before falling to Blanchfield and he fired home from close range.

Borough are due to host Billericay on Tuesday night.
