Borough prove too strong

RYE United were unsuccessful in their quest for a Sussex Senior Cup upset on Tuesday night.

The Sussex County League outfit went down 3-0 away to Blue Square Bet Premier side Eastbourne Borough in the quarter-finals at Priory Lane.

First half goals from Steve Brinkhurst and Matt Crabb put the Sports in the driving seat before Richard Pacquette rounded-off the scoring early in the second period.

Borough will face Sussex League leaders Crawley Down in the semi-finals and the final will be the first match to be played at Brighton & Hove Albion’s new Amex Stadium during July.

Elsewhere last night, Bexhill United became the first team this season to avoid defeat in both league matches against Sussex Division Two leaders Lancing.

A 32nd minute own goal from Ben White gave Lancing a half time lead, but Zack McEniry netted a 61st minute equaliser for a fourth-placed Bexhill side which also picked up a point in the reverse fixture on the opening day.

Full reports on both matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.

Sidley United moved three points clear at the top of Reserve Section (East), meanwhile, with a single goal victory at home to Southwick. Veteran marksman Darrol Parris struck in the second half.
