Boss hails 10-goal Common

The Commoners pulled off a crushing 10-0 win away to Saltdean United in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One on Saturday after scoring eight goals in the second half.

Jamie Crone scored a hat-trick and strike partner Lewis Hole bagged a brace, and both players now have 17 goals for the season in all competitions.

Eldridge said: “It was an excellent result and fully deserved. People have asked me ‘were they poor or were you good?’ and I would say a little bit of both.

“We’ve always got goals in us in terms of the way we play and the attacking players we’ve got, and we scored some really good goals, both individually and collectively. And maybe we could’ve had a couple more as well.

“It could’ve been 2-1 at half time or 1-1 at one stage, but first half was very professional against the wind. Then we started really well in the second half and there were two or three goals in really quick succession which took the stuffing out of them a little bit, and after that we never really looked back. When we got to six or seven I thought we could get to 10.”

Having emphatically seen off the division’s bottom club last weekend, Common will be aiming to defeat second-bottom opposition tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Seaford Town. Kick-off is 3pm.

“We’ll be looking to carry on from where we were last weekend and looking to pick up three points,” Eldridge continued. “If we can play as well as we did last weekend, that should be possible.”

Common are in eighth place as they approach the midway point in their league campaign, with only five points separating fifth-placed Southwick from 11th-placed Bexhill United in a congested part of the table.

“We’ve still got plenty to play for in the league and the cups,” added Eldridge, who is hoping his team can go on a new year run similar to that it produced last season.

As seems to have become the norm, Common will be without several players against a Seaford side which has scored fewer goals than any other team in the division with just 11 in 17 games.

Martin Denny and David Ammoun are both away, Jared Lusted, Zack McEniry and Steve Mote are injured, Jerome Smith is rated 50-50 having picked up an ankle knock against Saltdean, and goalkeeper Matt Cruttwell may be required by Hastings United. On the plus side, Sam Brown, Billy Trickett and Steve Morris should be back.
