He said: “I was very proud of the team, there was obviously going to be a massive gulf in ability and fitness but I can’t fault our effort and work rate against a phenomenally talented side.

“At 3-1 down with 25 minutes to go we gave ourselves a slight glimmer of hope but the fourth goal was a killer and the tiredness set in from that point.

“The evening as a whole was a fantastic experience for all the players and staff.

“The facilities were world class and despite being eliminated from this years Sussex Senior Cup it was definitely a night we will remember fondly.”

The Pirates, who are still unbeaten in the league after beating Mile Oak 1-0 last week, now get back to league action with a trip to Arundel tomorrow (Saturday) before hosting Hailsham Town on Boxing Day.

Light said: “Saturday our focus returns to the bread and butter of the SCFL and a trip to Arundel.

“Their results have been somewhat inconsistent over the first few months of the season but having beaten Roffey 5-1 last Saturday we know as we can’t take anything granted and will have to be at our best to continue our unbeaten run and remain at the top of the league table.”

Little Common host bottom club East Preston in the SCFL Premier tomorrow, hoping to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Alfold last week.

On Boxing Day they visit Langney Wanderers.
