Clubs target strong finish

The footballers of Bexhill United and Little Common are keen to finish the season with winning runs.

Both clubs were victorious last weekend and are hoping to reproduce the same sort of form over their final five Macron Store Sussex County Football League Division Two games.

Bexhill got back to winning ways with a 3-0 success away to Steyning Town which moved them level on points with third-placed AFC Uckfield Town, who occupy the final promotion spot. Bexhill have played two more matches, however, and have an inferior goal difference.

“We’re not thinking about promotion,” said Bexhill manager Marc Munday. “We want to go on a good winning run again and see what happens.

“Everyone enjoys football when you’re winning. Football’s a horrible game when you’re losing; I don’t get any pleasure out of that. You want to get on a winning run to make your weekends and the rest of your week go nicely. That’s all I want and all the lads want. It’s one game at a time.”

Next up for Bexhill tomorrow (Saturday) is a trip to an eighth-placed Oakwood side which trails them by 12 points with no less than seven games in hand.

“I feel they’re quite similar to us,” Munday continued, ahead of a fixture which has been postponed twice. “I hope that I can put out a full strength side.”

Andy Atkin made a goalscoring return for Bexhill last weekend, but Munday is unsure over the key striker’s availability for the rest of the campaign.

“Andy really enjoyed it, but he’s got a lot going on with work and at home,” Munday added. “We want him to play every week and if he can he’s always going to be a favourite to be in there, but I can’t guarantee anything.”

Common’s last gasp 2-1 win at home to Mile Oak on Saturday - their 10th league victory of the campaign - has moved them up to sixth and within a point of their victims, albeit having played three more games.

“They’re a team in and around us so those three points are vital,” said Common player-manager Russell Eldridge.

“We’ve kept speaking about not doing as well as we wanted to have done this season, but we’ve got to keep working hard and we want to finish as high as we can by winning as many games as we can. There’s a good spirit amongst the boys.”

Common - who are nine points behind Bexhill - are fixtureless tomorrow and are due to return to action away to second-placed Wick & Barnham United next weekend.
