Second half goals from Jamie Crone and Martin Denny gave Common their second successive away victory in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One and a rare clean sheet.

The Commoners made two changes to the team which won at Mile Oak the previous weekend, with Denny and Jared Lusted coming in to replace Dan Estherby and James Maynard.

Second-bottom Seaford enjoyed the better of the first half, spurning numerous opportunities to open the scoring, and Common rarely troubled the home goalkeeper.

The first chance of the match came from a left wing cross and despite misjudging the delivery, Common goalkeeper Matt Cruttwell was able to push the ball over the crossbar. A driving run and shot from midfield saw Billy Pout hit the post before Cruttwell was on hand to block an effort with his legs.

At the other end, Russell Eldridge struck a free kick into the wall before blasting the rebound over. Seaford once again should have opened the scoring when a delivery across the area led to a goalbound effort being cleared off the line.

Common saw out the remainder of the half by dealing with numerous deliveries into the area and the score remained 0-0 at the interval.

With the wind at their backs, Common began the second period much the livelier and with the half barely three minutes old, Crone fired them into the lead following Lewis Hole’s cross.

Crone almost made it two when he raced on to a throughball and beat the goalkeeper, but the tight angle meant that his shot hit the post.

One soon became two, however, when Denny rose to head home Liam Foster’s cross in the 56th minute.

The home side had a great opportunity to reduce the deficit, but Cruttwell pulled off a superb save as the Seaford striker looked set to bury his shot from six yards.

Common comfortably saw out the remainder of the match with Seaford’s main threat coming from set-pieces. At the other end, a long range Foster effort was shovelled round the post as Common looked to add a third.

Common: Cruttwell, Sherwood, Lusted (Wells), Brown (Sloat), Mote, Eldridge, Foster, Burgon (Bristow), Hole, Crone, Denny.
