Football derby likely to be off

Prospects of the local derby between Rye United and Sidley United tonight (Tuesday) going ahead look bleak.

Although Rye played at home to Guernsey in the FA Vase on Saturday, the pitch was very heavy and there has been plenty of rain since.

A statement from Rye’s Twitter account last night said: “Chances of Rye v Sidley tomorrow virtually nil. Rain pelting down, Salts flooded, rain set to continue.”

The Sussex County Football League Division One fixture has already been postponed once on Boxing Day and although we’re almost at the end of January, neither club has yet reached the midway point of its league programme.

In fact, Rye have played just one league game since the 4-2 win at Arundel on December 1 and Sidley have played only one match of any description since December 11.

There has been no official word yet on whether Little Common’s Sussex RUR Charity Cup quarter-final at home to East Preston tonight will go ahead, but with the rain continuing, it must surely be in doubt.
