Hastings United’s footballers pulled off a magnificent 4-1 victory away to Guernsey today (Saturday).

The U’s struck twice in either half to complete a Ryman Football League Division One South double over the Green Lions and rise to sixth in the table.

Billy Medlock struck twice in United’s 2-0 win at home to Guernsey last month and was at it again in the return match. The striker marked his return from a two-match ban with a terrific 30-yard free kick to open the scoring after 20 minutes.

One became two in the 36th minute. Zac Attwood continued his improved form in front of goal by converting the rebound after Guernsey goalkeeper Chris Tardif parried the initial effort.

Guernsey pulled one back in the 42nd minute through a Ross Allen penalty following a foul by Sean Ray on Angus Mackay inside the box.

Ollie Rowe restored United’s two-goal cushion in the 70th minute with a close range finish following a free kick. Guernsey lost Tardif to an injury sustained in the run-up to the goal.

Defender Tom Strawbridge took over the gloves and six minutes later United put the icing on the cake with a fourth goal, Ray scoring with a powerful header from a corner.

It was a big result for United in their quest for a play-off place, and they are now one place and two points outside the all-important top five with games in hand. They are due to visit 20th-placed East Grinstead Town on Tuesday night.

United: Doherty; Wilson, Rowe, Ray, Deen; Cumming-Bart (Richardson-Brown), Cruttwell, Adams, Cole; Medlock (Temba), Attwood (Attwood). Attendance: 613.
