The U’s drew 2-2 away to fellow play-off hopefuls Corinthian-Casuals in Ryman Football League Division One South having led 2-0 at half time.

It was only United’s third draw in their 35 league fixtures so far this season and two of them have come against Corinthian following the 3-3 result at The Pilot Field five weeks ago.

Corinthian started well, but United opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Billy Medlock scored his fourth goal in three games and another spectacular one at that with a dipping effort from around 30 yards.

Medlock saw another strike from distance saved by Corinthian goalkeeper Ricky Bowry before United doubled their advantage in the 20th minute. Sam Cruttwell evaded several challenges and teed up Zac Attwood to score with a low shot from 20 yards.

Corinthian striker Jamie Byatt had a looping header well saved by United goalkeeper Harry Doherty and later blazed over from an inviting position. In between times, Sekou Kaba hit the outside of United’s post.

Medlock received lengthy treatment at the end of the first half and although the striker was back out for the second period, Corinthian started brightly. Kevant Serbony volleyed wide before Warren Morgan got in down the right and made it 2-1 in the 57th minute.

Byatt fired a low shot just wide, but Corinthian’s pressure was rewarded with a deserved 82nd minute equaliser as a long ball fell kindly for Byatt to shoot past Doherty.

United remain in the final play-off spot of fifth and still have games in hand on everybody else. Their next two matches are also away from home, starting with a trip to mid-table Carshalton Athletic on Saturday.

United: Doherty, Deen, Wilson, Cruttwell (Temba 74), Ray, Rowe, Medlock, Adams, Attwood, Cumming-Bart, Cole. Subs not used: Johnson, Foster, Smith, Rose. Attendance: 130.
