Hastings hunt Lions '˜keeper

Hastings United Football Club looks set to bring in a goalkeeper from Millwall ahead of a key fixture tomorrow (Saturday).

Harry Girling, who has played a few games for Millwall’s under-21s this season having spent three years at Arsenal earlier in his career, could feature in United’s home game against high-flying Guernsey.

If he does play, Girling will be United’s fourth different goalkeeper in as many matches - a situation which contrasts completely with Josh Pelling’s amazing run of 112 consecutive league appearances until being injured against Chipstead last month.

Joe Taylor seemed poised to take over the gloves for the foreseeable future after making his debut against East Grinstead Town on Tuesday, last week, but was then taken to hospital after suffering severe abdominal pains last Friday night.

Although teenage prospect Dan Rose stepped in and performed admirably in the 2-1 win away to Whitstable Town on Saturday, United manager Garry Wilson is seeking a more experienced head as his regular stopper.

He said: “We’ve spoken to another ‘keeper (Girling) who might be in the frame for Saturday. I would think Joe might not be quite ready and maybe we’ll look at bringing the other lad in.

“Joe came out of hospital on Monday and it’s not as bad as was feared. He’s had some fluids put into him and a scan, and he’s in the recovery stages.

“Dan did extremely well on Saturday and played a massive part in the result. I thought he handled the occasion very well, kicked very well and made one very important save before half time. We’re really pleased with his development, but at this stage of the season we need a little bit more experience.”

Tomorrow’s game, incidentally, will kick-off at the earlier than usual time of 1pm.
