Isthmian clubs 'screaming' for restart are thinking of themselves

Lewes manager Hugo Langton says the Isthmian League’s restart has to be fair for all – and clubs ‘screaming’ for it to happen must remember that.

Talks and debates are continuing over whether league fixtures can resume now clubs in Covid tiers two and three are all allowed fans into their grounds.

Issues remain over problems with opening revenue-making bars and clubhouses in both tiers, while clubs in tier three – including the league’s many Kent clubs – do have tighter

restrictions on them.

Lewes players have been getting together for training a couple of times a week but Langton said that when it came to matches resuming, he was happy to be patient.

Langton said: “I knew from the off this season that it was only a matter of time until it got halted. It was inevitable. We all want to play but trying to keep cases of the virus down is more important.

“I won’t put any pressure on the league to start – it’s not about me nor about any one person or club. I see some clubs screaming that they want to restart and want to play but they’re only thinking of themselves.

“We all have to look at the bigger picture.”

Langton said if there were some clubs in any division facing tougher lockdown problems than others, the restart of league fixtures would not be on a level playing field.

He said: “We’ll wait and see what happens and will be ready to restart when it can safely happen.”
