Lambert: Bexhill wanted it more

John Lambert conceded that Bexhill United “wanted it more” in the Hastings & District FA Senior Cup final.

Bexhill recovered from going 3-2 down in the 89th minute to beat cross-town rivals Sidley United 4-3 after an incredible finish at Gullivers last night (Tuesday).

Speaking after the game, Sidley manager Lambert said: “To be fair they wanted it more than us and I just said that to them (the Sidley players) in no uncertain terms in there (the changing room).

“Sometimes you’ve got to battle and I thought they were more up for it. Fair play to Bexhill they beat us. They didn’t give up even when they went 3-2 down at the end.”

Bexhill triumphed despite playing the majority of the match with 10 men following the first half dismissal of goalkeeper Gavin Bourne, who played for the Sidley side which won last year’s final against Bexhill.

“I think they were edging it when it was 11v11,” continued Lambert. “When they went down to 10 men I think it probably helped them more than it did us. On the night we didn’t perform.”
