Lambert questions player commitment

The Blues boss was disappointed with the attendance at training on Tuesday night following the abject 3-0 loss at home to Lancing on Saturday.

Lambert said: “I think that’s a lot to do with our problem at the moment. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know if it’s a generation thing. It’s not all of them, but a lot of them aren’t bothered whether they train and win.

“They all talk a good game, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, they’ve not got what it takes sometimes. Sometimes you question people’s commitment. Players know what it takes to play this (standard of) football with training twice a week.

“It’s always different people (missing) on different days. I’ve never ever had a full complement at training which disappoints me because I want to work on things and sometimes you can’t because not everybody’s there.”

Sidley remain 11th in Sussex County Football League Division One with nine games remaining, six of which are on home soil starting with a visit from 13th-placed Selsey tomorrow (Saturday).

“The team sometimes doesn’t reflect how I used to play and how I want to win,” continued Lambert. “All the players I’ve got have got bags of talent, but talent alone doesn’t win things and get you on in football.

“I’ve seen so many talented players who haven’t done anything. I would’ve loved to have their talent, but I played a higher standard than them because I had the commitment and belief in certain things that were taught to me by my managers and coaches.

“It’s a different culture today and I don’t know if it’s for the better. It’s a comfortable lifestyle people have today and I just don’t think some of the modern day players can store knowledge. They get it for a game or two and then suddenly it just goes out the window again.”
