Some famous names from the recent past showcased their skills at The Polegrove in front of a crowd thought to be several hundred and stayed on afterwards for a dinner, auction and raffle in a packed marquee.

Bexhill United chairman Robin Powell said: “I’m absolutely delighted. I left the ground at 11.45pm and we still hadn’t cleared the marquee by any stretch of the imagination, nor the clubhouse bar.”

On the pitch, the Bexhill United Legends XI took a first half lead when Dave Carey’s pull-back looked to be turned into his own net by David Howells, although Dale Seymour was trying to claim the goal.

Lashings stepped up a gear in the closing quarter, though, to run out 3-1 winners. Howells levelled from a contentious penalty before Frank Sinclair put them in front and Martin Hayes rounded-off the scoring.

Bexhill manager Gerard Moyse said: “It was brilliant. It was competitive and people still want to win, but just to have those people there was fantastic; massive for Bexhill. It was good to be involved in.”

Other famous names in the Lashings included Nigel Winterburn, Perry Groves, Neil Webb, Kerry Dixon, Matt Holland, David Hillier, Clayton Blackmore and Luther Blissett.

Among the Bexhill players were Craig “Bomber” Harris, Paul Tuppenney, Marc Munday, Josh Elliott-Noye, Will Dunstall, Craig Willard, Jimmy Watson, Scott McDonald, Peter Heritage and Glenn Sully.

Heritage added: “It was brilliant. I just thought it was so well organised and that big marquee just made The Polegrove look brilliant. The players that came down were really good; so approachable. It was a fantastic occasion and so well supported.”
