A late long range goal gave 10-man Bexhill United their first points of the new season with a 1-0 win at Seaford Town last night (Tuesday).
Jack Woodward’s first goal for the club opened Bexhill’s account in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One despite the second half sending-off of Dan Cruikshank.
Bexhill manager Marc Munday said: “I was pleased. It was going to be a potential banana skin. They were poor, but it was hard to get that goal and the first set of points.”
Bexhill bossed the game, but lacked that final cutting edge against a Seaford side desperate to improve on the solitary point it picked up in the whole of last season.
After a goalless first half, Cruikshank was dismissed for the second game running midway through the second period. The defender was shown a second yellow card for a scything challenge near the touchline.
“He was booked in the first half right in front of the dugout and I don’t know what he was booked for - it seemed very harsh,” said Munday. “But the second one he could’ve been sent-off for.”

Seaford then had a bit of the play for the first time in the contest, but Bexhill worked hard and ground out a result when Woodward’s 35-yard shot slithered through the goalkeeper’s hands and into the net.
“We thought it had gone wide,” admitted Munday. “It was in the top corner, but it seemed to be going so slowly, and the ‘keeper almost caught it and dropped it into the goal. We’ll take anything at this time.”
