Maggs: Be up for it in the right way

John Maggs doesn’t expect there to be any lingering ill-feeling as Hastings United prepare to host Horsham again today (Saturday).

The clubs are set to lock horns in Ryman Football League Division One South just seven days after United came from 2-0 down to run out 4-2 winners in an incident-packed FA Trophy tie.

Last weekend’s game was marred by an undignified free-for-all which resulted in two red cards for Horsham and one for United.

“There’s been a lot said about last Saturday, but I think whether you like it or not, the decision eventually comes down to the officials so it’s done and dusted as far as I’m concerned,” said United manager Maggs.

“Being a league game, this week is more important to me and I want us to be totally up for it in the right way. They (the players) know the action I’ve taken this week discipline-wise, but that remains our business. Certainly my players won’t take to the field thinking there’s any sort of points to prove.”

As well as feeling aggrieved at last weekend’s result, Horsham will be buoyed by a 3-1 win over leaders Walton Casuals on Wednesday night, which means second-placed United are only a point off the pace with a game in hand.

Sean Kelly will serve the second match of his three-game ban, but Josh Hare is set to return. Rodrigo Branco should make the squad, yet probably won’t start as he battles to shake off an ankle problem. Tom O’Connor is required by parent club Bromley once more and Akwasi Fobi-Edusei again won’t feature.

Elsewhere today, Rye United will be gunning for a fourth successive victory in all competitions as they head to Lancing in their first Sussex County Football League Division One away match since September 7.

In Sussex Division Two, Bexhill United will be desperate to rediscover some form as they host Seaford Town, Little Common have a tough game away to Mile Oak and Westfield make the long journey to Storrington. All matches will kick-off at 3pm.
