United went second with a 3-0 victory at home to Folkestone Invicta on Monday night which made it four wins and a draw from their last five games in all competitions.

“We’ve got work to do,” said United manager Maggs. “The players have got to do more than they did the other night and then we’ll be alright.

“We’ve done extremely well and our position in the league justifies that, but there are some cracks in it and if we’re going to continue to be amongst the challengers, then squad-wise I’ve got to strengthen a little bit.

“I’ve still got to concentrate on bringing in one or two which we definitely need. I’m close, but not close enough to doing it immediately. There’s a few out there which I’m interested in.”

United boast the division’s best defensive record, but the impending suspension for Sean Kelly following his contentious sending-off against Brentwood Town last weekend has brought the central defensive position into focus.

“We’re close to doing something, but whether it will be in time for Saturday I’m not sure,” continued Maggs, speaking on Wednesday afternoon.

“I’ve had no contact with Sean Ray. I’ve tried him a couple of times and he hasn’t as yet responded. My intentions are still to give him a run against Faversham (in a Robert Dyas Cup tie on Monday night), but I know that he’s talking to a couple of other clubs and Cray Wanderers have put in a seven-day approach for him.”
