Missed chances cost Westies
Westfield Football Club was left to rue a raft of missed chances after being beaten at home on Easter Monday.
The Westies hit the crossbar, had a penalty saved and missed a virtually empty net while the game was still goalless, and ended up losing 3-0 against top six side AFC Varndeanians.
Westfield manager Jack Stapley said: “If you can’t take one of 10 really good chances, you don’t deserve anything out of the game. It should’ve been game over within 10 or 12 minutes.”
Charlie Cornford clipped the top of the crossbar with a lob in the opening minute before Westfield missed their fourth successive penalty when Matt Dadswell’s spot-kick was saved. Sam Ellis then rounded the goalkeeper only to shoot wide when slightly off balance.
Westfield fell behind in the 15th minute as goalkeeper Connor Holland misjudged the flight of the ball in the strong wind and Ahmed Shaker’s delivery sailed straight in.
The home side could still have led at half time. Ellis skipped past several defenders only to shoot straight at the goalkeeper and Martyn Durrant headed over from a corner.
Varndeanians made sure of the points with two more goals in the second period. Matt Waterman made it 2-0 with a lovely turn and finish before Jack Langford completed the scoring with a very similar goal to the opener.
Westfield still had their moments. Roberto Martellini had a good chance which the goalkeeper did well to smother, Shane Fox screwed wide from inside the six yard box and Curtis Coombes shot wide with the goalkeeper to beat.
Westfield: Holland; Gravett, Dadswell (Da Palma), Willis, Durrant; Ward, Owens (Fox), Winter; Ellis, Martellini (Coombes), Cornford.
Eleventh-placed Westfield will again be on home soil this coming Saturday against 12th-placed Alfold. Kick-off at The Parish Field is 3pm.
