Nothing goes Common's way in Langney loss

Nothing seemed to go Little Common Football Club's way as its third game in five days ended in defeat.

The Commoners were on the wrong end of some key decisions as they lost 3-1 to Langney Wanderers in a Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One match played at Eastbourne United AFC last night (Wednesday).

Common player-manager Russell Eldridge said: “The performance generally was good considering it was our third game in five days and they didn’t play on Monday. I couldn’t fault anyone from the group, it was just frustrating more than anything.

“To play a team twice in just over a week is not ideal, but having the same set of officials is absolutely ridiculous from my point of view and the officials were very poor.”

After a fairly scrappy start, Common began to get in behind Langney - as they did several times during their 3-2 victory in the reverse fixture on Tuesday, last week - and get into some promising positions.

Nick Richardson was denied by an important tackle from a Langney defender, and a couple of balls from Jamie Crone and Richardson flashed across the box.

Common were also defending pretty well, restricting Langney mainly to long range efforts and when they did get closer to goal, Common put their bodies on the line when required.

Langney took a half time lead with a goal from the penalty spot after Eldridge was controversially penalised. The referee wasn’t going to award the spot-kick, but chose to do so after the linesman said Eldridge pulled his opponent back.

After the break, Langney doubled their advantage and moments later a Langney player was shown a yellow card for a foul - having earlier escaped a booking for deliberately handling Jake Sherwood’s ball over the top and denying Richardson a clear run on goal.

There was more frustration for Common when Lewis Hole was put through by a great ball from Cam Burgon only to be flagged offside even though Common were convinced he was well onside.

Langney put the result beyond doubt with a third goal before Hole nabbed a consolation with his 23rd of the season, coolly lifting his finish over the goalkeeper following a good ball from Sam Brown.
