Opportunity knocks for Hastings in league cup

Hastings United’s footballers will feel they have a real opportunity of reaching the latter stages of the league cup.

The U’s will host Sittingbourne in round three of the Ryman League’s Alan Turvey Trophy, sponsored by Robert Dyas, tonight (Tuesday) with a home quarter-final against Tooting & Mitcham United or Corinthian-Casuals at stake for the winners.

United have already beaten Sittingbourne twice in Division One South this season, winning 3-1 away from home during the opening week of the campaign and 2-0 at The Pilot Field last month.

The U’s are 13th in the league, albeit with at least three games in hand on all the teams above them. Sittingbourne are eight places and 15 points worse off having played two more matches.

As well as winning six of their last seven league fixtures, United have won eight and drawn one of their 11 cup ties so far this term, including an excellent penalty shoot-out victory away to Premier Division high-flyers Tonbridge Angels in the previous round of this competition.

Sittingbourne’s only victory in their last 12 matches came in the previous round against Chatham Town and while United were thrashing South Park 5-1 in the league on Saturday, the Brickies were thumped 6-1 by lowly Chipstead.

United manager Garry Wilson may well opt to shuffle his pack slightly again as the games continue to come thick and fast. Defender/midfielder Jack Walder still has two more matches to run on his suspension.

Tooting and Corinthian-Casuals, incidentally, are 18th and 11th respectively in the same division so Division One South is guaranteed to provide at least one of the four semi-finalists come the new year.

Kick-off at The Pilot Field tonight is 7.45pm, and admission is £6 for adults and £3 for concessions.

* Hastings United Supporters’ Club, meanwhile, is holding a quiz night at The Pilot Field clubhouse this coming Friday. It starts at 7.30pm and the cost is £2.50 per person.
