The match was arranged to give Hastings manager Sean Ray an opportunity to cast his eye over some potential new signings, including Danny Ellis, who played 45 minutes.

Ray was pleased with Westfield midfielder Sam Willett when he moved into the centre, Rye United reserve team player James Colston and the club’s under-18 players who featured.

He said: “There were a lot of changes and the boys weren’t really familiar with each other, but they did well and played some nice football at times. I was fairly pleased with what I saw.”

Bexhill joint manager Jamie Podmore was content with the performance of his side in what he described as “a good workout” against a Hastings team which plies its trade three divisions higher up the non-league pyramid.

He went on: “They did alright. Four-nil probably flattered them a little bit, but you could see the difference. They kept the ball better than us and their fitness levels were better than ours, but you would expect that.”
