Poyet delights Polegrove fans

Despite the cold, wind and rain, Gus Poyet turned up and showcased his skills at The Polegrove yesterday (Wednesday) evening.

The Uruguayan was the headline act in a Brighton & Hove Albion Ex-Pros & Guests XI which took on Bexhill United in a glamour friendly to mark the official opening of the football club’s new floodlights.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Poyet, now Albion manager, played for the best part of an hour, scoring Brighton’s first goal in a 6-2 defeat and hitting the crossbar with an audacious effort from out wide.

After leaving the field and getting changed, 44-year-old Poyet – whose Brighton side had an important Championship game the previous night – stayed behind to watch Chelsea in the clubhouse and signed autographs for fans.

Among the other big names to turn out for Brighton were assistant manager Mauricio Taricco, Guy Butters, Bob Booker, Richard Carpenter, Paul Watson, Charlie Oatway, Dean White and Gary Hart.

Andy Garman put Bexhill one-up at half time before substitutes Dan Hill (2), Dom Bristow (2) and Casey Ham sealed victory after the break. Paul Watson scored Brighton’s second from the penalty spot.
