Rye beaten at Newhaven

Rye United suffered their first defeat of the new season with a 3-2 loss at Newhaven last night (Wednesday).

The Quarterboys led 2-1 at half time in their second match of the Sussex County Football League Division One campaign, but conceded twice after the break to come home empty handed.

The game got off to a frantic start. Newhaven took a sixth minute lead when a lapse in concentration at the back allowed Mark Probert to take a touch in the six yard box before finishing well.

But Rye responded well to draw level three minutes later. Evan Archibald got the better of the last defender and chipped the goalkeeper to score his first goal for the club.

Gregg Berry’s second in as many games put Rye 2-1 up after just 20 minutes. The pacy former Sidley United attacking player caught out a Newhaven centre-half and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper.

Archibald hit the post from a corner later in the first half and had that gone in, the outcome may well have been different. As it was, though, Newhaven came on strong in the second half and hit the crossbar on several occasions.

Tyler Goatcher equalised from the penalty spot on 65 minutes after Dominic Cruttenden was penalised for handball and the same player won it for Newhaven 12 minutes later.
