Rye Down-ed by clinical leaders

Rye United’s title hopes appear all but over after a damaging defeat on Monday night.

The 2-0 loss at home to Sussex County Football League Division One leaders Crawley Down has left Rye 16 points off the pace with only two games in hand.

Both goals came during the opening 25 minutes from Tom Burton. Although Rye pinned their well-drilled opponents back for much of the second period and created a few half-chances, they were unable to get back into it.

A full report will appear in Friday’s Rye Observer.

It wasn’t all bad news for Rye, however, because their second string went top of Reserve Section (East) on the back of a 3-2 victory away to previous pacesetters Sidley United.
