Rye hopes suffer another blow

Rye United’s title hopes suffered a setback with a goalless draw at home to Sidley United on Easter Monday.

It was Rye’s first 0-0 of the season in any competition and the second successive league game they’ve failed to hit the target having netted in all of their first 34.

Although Rye remain top of Sussex County Football League Division One, only goal difference is keeping them above a Three Bridges side which has two games in hand. Mid-table Sidley have now hit the 50-point mark.

Elsewhere, Little Common and Bexhill United fought out a scrappy 1-1 draw in Division Two. Dan Hill put Bexhill ahead with an 88th minute penalty only for Russell Eldridge to level with a magnificent 90th minute free kick.

Also in Division Two, Westfield lost 3-2 in an entertaining game at home to Seaford Town. All the goals came in the second half with David Pugh equalising twice for Westfield before Seaford won it with a stoppage time penalty.

Westfield are certain to finish outside the two relegation places despite losing, while Common have moved up to third-from-bottom - above Midhurst & Easebourne on goal difference having played an extra game.

Full reports will appear in Friday’s Observers.
