Sam Ellis bagged the other two goals in a 5-0 victory away to Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division Two whipping boys Ferring.

"We missed chance after chance after chance; it was borderline embarrassing," said Westfield manager Jack Stapley, who estimated his team had well over 50 attempts at goal. "It was so easy and it should've been a lot more."

Smith opened his account in only the fourth minute and by that stage Westfield could have already been several goals ahead.

The same player made it 2-0 shortly before the break and completed his treble in between Ellis's two seconds half strikes. Smith now has 24 goals already this season and Ellis has netted five times in the last two matches.

Most of the game was played at walking pace and Stapley reckoned Ferring's goalkeeper pulled off around 25 saves.

Both sides had a man sent-off. A Ferring player saw red for head-butting Asher Grindle, who was booked for his reaction and not long afterwards picked up a second yellow for a comment to the referee after he'd been substituted.

Fourth-placed Westfield will face a far sterner test when they make the long trip to unbeaten league leaders Bosham in round four of the Sussex Intermediate Challenge Cup this coming Saturday.

"They just keep beating everyone at the moment," added Stapley, who will be without several regulars. "We've got to look at the way we play and maybe change a couple of things to try and counteract them."
