Superb day of football fun

A superb day was had by all as a number of primary schools in the Rye and Battle area contested a World Cup-style football tournament.

Twelve teams battled it out at Brede Recreation Ground on Tuesday in a competition organised by Albion in the Community, the charitable arm of Brighton & Hove Albion FC.

The semi-finals were very close affairs. Colombia (Brede Primary) edged out England (Salehurst Primary) in the first last four tie and the other semi saw Portugal (Playden Primary) inch past Ecuador (Rye Primary) by the odd goal in three in a tight game.

The final was a nailbiting encounter with Portugal just scraping past Colombia in a terrific game which flowed from end to end. Both teams hit the woodwork and the goalkeepers made some terrific saves.

The scores were level at 1-1 at full time, so extra-time was required. With penalties looming, Portugal scored the decisive goal late on to win 2-1.

Albion in the Community would like to thank all the schools that took part, and give special thanks to Tai, Nathan and the coaches who handled the refereeing superbly all day.

Other schools represented included Peasmarsh, Staplecross, Icklesham, Netherfield and Winchelsea. For full details of summer courses being run by Albion in the Community, visit www.albioninthecommunity.org.uk
