Tate, who signed late last week from Eastbourne Town, made an instant impact as Common saw off Selsey in round one of the Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup.

Common player-manager Russell Eldridge made one change to the starting line-up for the all-Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One tie, with Tate replacing Adam Smith.

It was the Commoners who began the match on the front foot, with Cam Burgon seeing an early effort blocked following a run across the edge of the box.

The deadlock was soon broken in the eighth minute when a slight deflection saw Lewis Hole’s goalbound effort beat the wrong-footed visiting goalkeeper.

Eldridge should have extended Common’s lead when he dragged a shot wide following a neat one-two on the edge of the area and Burgon saw another effort drift wide.

Common goalkeeper Matt Cruttwell was rarely troubled at the other end, although Dan Cruikshank did well to block an effort inside the area.

Common’s second goal arrived after 30 minutes when Tate prodded home Dom Bristow’s cross.

Tate was on hand to make it 3-0 nine minutes later when he stabbed home on the goal-line following a corner. He went on to the complete his treble with a neat finish having being played through on goal.

Leading 4-0 at the interval, the Commoners were well in control and added a fifth just after the restart when Tate set up Hole for his second of the afternoon.

The visitors did enjoy a spell of pressure of their own and saw two efforts flash across the goal before Cruttwell made a smart low save to preserve a clean sheet.

Common could have added to the scoreline in the dying minutes, but Jake Sherwood was unable to connect with Burgon’s ball across the area and Hole blazed an effort over the crossbar.

Common: Cruttwell, Sherwood, Cooper, Eldridge, Aston, Cruikshank (McEniry), Saville (Wells), Bristow (Curteis), Hole, Tate, Burgon.
