Hastings United have announced plans for a testimonial for ‘leader of men’ Sam Adams this summer– and boss Chris Agutter believes it’s not before time.

Adams has played close to 600 games for United, scoring 140 goals in the process. Adams, now 33, made his debut for Hastings away to Corinthian-Casuals in 2005. The 33-year-old played a major part of the promotion to the Ryman premier division in 2006-07.

Speaking when he chalked up his 500th appearance, Adams described that success as his best moment with Hastings. He said the best of his 130 goals for Hastings was a top corner strike from the right-hand side against Greenwich Borough.

Agutter said: “I’m delighted Sammy’s getting a testimonial. It’s been talked about for a while.

“People ask me if he’s slowing up at his age but I’d say he’s still our most productive player. His stats for goals, assists, distance covered show that – he’s an absolute machine. He’s a beast.

“He’s such a good influence on the pitch and in the dressing room. He wants to play every week, he trains hard and he will be in my team all the time I’m at the club and he is.

“I’d say he’s in the top five of all the players I’ve ever worked with. He’s got everything.”

Adams is a Spurs fans and Agutter said it would be great if Jose Mourinho would bring a team to Hastings for the big game. But he added: “I might be a bit worried if they brought their whole first team! I might have to park the bus like others do against us...”
