Things must change quickly, says Bexhill boss

Marc Munday admits ‘things need to change quickly’ for his out-of-form Bexhill United side.

The Pirates have lost four and drawn one of their last five games in all competitions - having won four out of five immediately prior to that sequence.

Bexhill manager Munday said: “It’s really concerning. You can’t go that long without picking up a win. I know a few of the games have been in the cups, but for me we’ve got to stop the rot as soon as possible.

“It’s been really disappointing the last few games. We’ve been playing alright for 30, 40 minutes, but not for 90.”

Of particular concern for Munday is the defensive side of things. Bexhill - who were pretty miserly at the back last season - have shipped eight goals in their two games over the past week.

“I pride myself on clean sheets and we’ve got to get a clean sheet somewhere along the line,” he continued. “That’s not just aimed at the defence; it’s the team as a whole - we’ve got to start defending from the front. Things do need to change and quickly.”

Bexhill are ninth in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One with 10 points from six games, although no team in the division has played fewer matches.

“The one saving grace is somehow we’re still not out of it because everyone seems to be losing apart from Haywards Heath, who are having a great run,” Munday went on.

“If we can turn it round now, this bad run of form hasn’t killed us, whereas realistically we should be out of it.”

After three consecutive home games, Bexhill will hit the road again tomorrow (Saturday) when they travel to fifth-placed Southwick.

“Maybe coming away from home might be what we need,” added Munday. “We’ve got to stop the rot somehow, but I think they’re a good side as well and it’s going to be tough.”

Munday expects to have a stronger squad at his disposal than for the midweek Sussex RUR Charity Cup game against Langney Wanderers when, not for the first time this season, Bexhill’s plans were hit by late withdrawals.

Jack Woodward, who Munday believes will make a significant difference, will be available after suspension, and Munday himself hopes to be involved. Andy Garman and Ben Phipps could return after resting knocks in midweek.

“We need to tighten up - there’s no two ways about it,” added assistant manager Marc Gall, who believes a lack of continuity in team selection/availability isn’t helping matters. “We have to be more solid, but we will make sure we get it right between me and Marc.”
