Triumphant night in RUR Cup

All three senior football clubs in the Bexhill area were victorious in the Sussex RUR Charity Cup last night (Tuesday).

Sidley United triumphed 2-0 at home to Newhaven, while Bexhill United and Little Common pulled off tremendous wins away to higher grade opposition.

Common eventually prevailed 4-3 on penalties away to Hassocks after the sides had remarkably been locked together at 3-3 at the end of normal time and 5-5 at the end of extra-time.

Although Common fell behind in the first seven minutes, a smart finish by Jared Lusted and a Chris Cumming-Bart penalty put them 2-1 up before Hassocks made it 2-2 at half time.

The hosts went in front again five minutes into the second half only for Lusted to level shortly afterwards. Another Cumming-Bart penalty and a Lewis Hole strike put Common 5-3 up in the first period of extra-time.

Hassocks replied with two goals in quick succession in the second period of extra-time, but Common held their nerve to win the shoot-out. Russell Eldridge, Scott Darvil, Cumming-Bart and Jordan Wood were the successful takers.

Elsewhere, Bexhill came from behind to win 2-1 against Shoreham and preserve their proud unbeaten record this season. Steve Morris ensured the teams went in level at half time with a 25-yard drive into the top corner.

Bexhill were by far the better side in the second half and although several chances went begging, Jack Aston capped their best performance of the campaign by scoring the winner from Martin Denny’s cross.

Division One side Sidley put their recent problems behind them to defeat Division Two leaders Newhaven. Kenny Pogue gave the Blues a half time lead and provided the cross for Dominic Clarke to head the second.

Common will entertain Mile Oak or Saltdean United in the last 16, Sidley will host Lancing (as they did in the John O’Hara League Challenge Cup) and Bexhill will again be away against Broadbridge Heath.
